Lydia Treviño was an educator, accountant, artist, mother, and lifelong student of Spanish language and culture. Her professional life spanned banking, insurance, accounting, and bilingual education, but some of the most meaningful parts of her life were spent exploring the world, learning from other cultures, and sharing those experiences with her family.
Lydia earned her degree in Education from Texas A&I University and devoted many years to bilingual education. She was a member of the Spanish Honor Society and taught bilingual studies in school districts in South Texas and in Oaxaca City, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Her love of language and culture also led to a close collaboration with Dr. Stanley Bittinger, with whom she traveled throughout Mexico studying Chicano culture and the history of the Maya. Together they visited ancient Maya sites including Palenque, Tulum, Chichén Itzá, and others.
During her time teaching in Oaxaca, Lydia brought her oldest daughter and only son to experience a total solar eclipse from atop the pyramid at Monte Albán. For Lydia, education was never confined to a classroom. She believed in seeing, experiencing, and sharing the world.
A Life of Travel and Discovery
Lydia continued to travel throughout her later years, often making family and discovery the center of the journey.
After the loss of her eldest daughter, Lydia traveled to Costa Rica to visit her son, who was living near the country's rain forest. The trip included time near the Pre-Columbian Chiefdom Settlements with Stone Spheres of the Diquís, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
In 2018, Lydia traveled with her daughter and son-in-law to Drake Bay, Costa Rica. Reaching the beach meant a boat ride through the Sierpe River followed by a beach landing. That evening, the group watched a mother whale and her calf breach together offshore.
She loved it.
These experiences capture something essential about Lydia: she remained curious. She traveled, learned, taught, painted, and kept discovering new things throughout her life.
Later years
In her later years, Lydia found a new joy in painting. Her original works reflect the color, calm, and creativity that became such a meaningful part of this chapter of her life.
